AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Our local affiliate, American Association of University Women South Haven MI Affiliate, Inc., was established in 1947 and now has an average of 150 members from Allegan, Van Buren and surrounding counties.

In November 2017, AAUW SH became a 501(c) 3 charitable organization to further support our mission through donations and grants.

True to our mission, we are active in our branch and community through the following projects and activities:

  • Award scholarships for female high school graduates, current college students and non-traditional students continuing their education
  • Provide support and mentoring for students high school and college levels
  • Run an annual Used Book Sale during Blueberry Festival to raise funds for scholarships
  • Support for Sylvia’s Place, a women’s shelter in Allegan
  • Monitor and respond to policies and legislation pertaining to our mission at the local, state and national levels
  • Educate area high schoolers on the electoral process and register new voters
  • Facilitate candidate forums for national, state, and local elections
  • Donate to South Haven Memorial Library for children’s books
  • Partner with Open Door community dinners for those in need, Hope Parent Resource Center dinners for teen parents, and Blessings in a Backpack to feed school children
  • Sponsor teacher appreciation activities

There are various opportunities to work on these important initiatives by becoming a member of one of our committees, including:

  • Book Sale Committee

  • Public Policy Committee
  • Rapid Responders (a Public Policy subcommittee)
