AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Our
local affiliate, American Association of University Women South Haven MI Affiliate INC., was established in 1947 and
consists of over 100 members from Allegan and Van Buren counties as well as some members farther afield.
True to our mission, we are active in our branch and community through the following projects and activities:
• Award Scholarships to female high school graduates and non-traditional students continuing their education
• Provide support for students at South Haven High School and other Colleges
• Annual Used Book Sale held during Blueberry Fest to raise funds for scholarships
• Provide support for Sylvia’s Place, Allegan’s women’s shelter.
• Monitor and respond to policies and legislation pertaining to our mission at the local, state and national levels.
• Educate area high schoolers on the electoral process and register new voters.
• Facilitate candidate forums for national, state, and local elections.
• Donate to South Haven Memorial Library for children’s books.
• Partner with Open Door community dinners for those in need, Hope Parent Resource Center dinners for teen
parents, and Blessings in a Backpack to feed school children.
• Sponsor Teacher Appreciation activities.
• Financed local students’ visit to Art Institute of Chicago and History Club competitors to travel to Washington,
D.C. through member contributions.
• Sponsored Bridge Magazine’s Michigan Truth Tour to inform residents of current state issues.
• Became a 501(c) 3 status in November 2017 to allow for further support of our mission through donations and
grants
